PROBLEM

The current Mindbody app, despite being a market leader, falls short of the dynamic and innovative branding expected from top wellness brands. Its outdated design and cumbersome functionality hinder user engagement and navigation. This misalignment compromises the user experience and risks its competitive edge. Addressing these issues presents a significant opportunity to enhance the Mindbody app's leadership in the wellness industry.

SOLUTION

To address the Mindbody app's shortcomings, significant UX changes are needed. Modernizing the visual design, simplifying navigation, and enhancing core functionalities like booking and personalization are essential. Adding interactive features and gamification will boost user engagement. Regular usability testing and continuous feedback will ensure the app evolves with user needs, maintaining its competitive edge and leadership in the wellness industry.

DESIGN PROCESS

My 6+ week design process utilized tools like Zoom, Figma, and Photoshop. I started with 2+ weeks of user reviews and interviews to gather insights and define personas and problem statements. In the next 4 weeks, I brainstormed, created mood boards, and developed prototypes in Figma. I aimed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the competitive landscape surrounding the Mindbody app. To achieve this, I conducted detailed competitor research focusing on the strengths and barriers of key players in the market. This involved extensive analysis of similar apps, identifying features that enhance user experience and areas where they fall short. As the research progressed, I continuously updated my findings to reflect the latest data and trends. This approach enabled me to view the Mindbody app in the context of its competition, offering insights into potential improvements and innovations. Vagaro stands out with strong social integration and a user-friendly interface but has limited third-party integrations and can be complex for new users. Each app caters to different user needs in the fitness and wellness market, highlighting diverse strengths and weaknesses.

PERSONA DEVELOPMENT

I aimed to form a deeper understanding of my users' goals, needs, experiences, and behaviors in the Mindbody app. To achieve this, I created a persona representing one of the key user segments based on extensive internet research of the Mindbody market. As the project progressed and more data was gathered, I continuously updated this persona. This approach helped me step out of my own perspective and reconsider my initial ideas. During the research phase of this case study, leveraging App Store reviews provided valuable, authentic, and diverse user feedback. Analyzing these reviews revealed common pain points, such as complexity, scheduling, search, booking, tracking, and disappearing passes. Users of the Mindbody app express significant frustration with its complexity and usability, finding it overly complicated and time-consuming, which serves as a barrier between them and their fitness studios. They report difficulties accessing schedules and integrating them with personal calendars, and criticize the app's search functionality as unintuitive and ineffective, particularly when searching for classes associated with specific gyms. Booking classes often presents challenges due to problems accessing updated schedules and pricing information. Additionally, users desire better workout tracking capabilities, wishing to review past workouts beyond the current month. Issues with disappearing class passes and inadequate customer support further contribute to a negative user experience, indicating a need for substantial improvements in the app's usability, functionality, and support services.

2.Define: User Journey, Pain Points and Opportunities.

USER JOURNEY

To boost user engagement and retention in the Mindbody app, I focused on optimizing the booking process by developing and validating a current-state user journey map. This journey map was instrumental in identifying key opportunities for improvement, leading to targeted design changes that addressed significant pain points and enhanced the overall user experience. Since the booking process is a critical touchpoint that directly affects users' decisions to attend classes or services, optimizing this area was essential for encouraging regular app usage.
